Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What is a crown?

A crown is a dental restoration to cover and protect damaged teeth. This damage could be caused by a severe cavity, breaking and chipping of the tooth, or general loss of tooth shape over time. Taking the shape of your natural tooth, the crown restores the size, strength, and appearance of your tooth, as well.

Dental crowns can be made of several different materials, including:

  • Metal
  • Porcelain
  • Resin
  • Ceramic

Porcelain can also fuse to metal, providing another crown option that resembles the appearance of your natural tooth.

What is a bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to neighboring teeth or implants. Similar to how a crown covers one tooth, the bridge covers the teeth beside the artificial tooth. However, with a bridge, the crowns connect to the artificial tooth that takes the place of your missing tooth.

Like crowns, bridges can also be made of metal, porcelain, resin, and ceramic.

Why do I need a crown or bridge?

You may need a crown if you have a damaged tooth, whether cracked or chipped, or have a severe cavity. On the other hand, if you’re missing a tooth or need a tooth removed due to decay and damage, you could benefit from a bridge.

There are several benefits to receiving a crown and bridge, such as:

  • Resistant to decay
  • Resemblance to your natural tooth
  • Strong structure
  • No need for surgery

It’s important to note that the results of your crown and bridge may differ depending on the type of material the dentist uses. Our doctor discusses your options to ensure you receive the right bridge or crown for you.

What is the process like to receive a crown or bridge?

To receive a crown, the professionals at our office take an X-ray of your teeth to examine the severity of your damaged tooth. We then takes an impression of your teeth to replicate the shape with the crown. After this, the doctor files down the enamel of your decayed tooth to fit the crown on top of the damaged area.

Securing the cap in place, the doctor bonds the crown to your tooth with dental cement. After this, the bite is tested and the crown is filed to ensure a comfortable fit to finalize the process.

The process for placing a bridge may take slightly longer than a crown, typically requiring two to three visits.

Completing similar steps to placing a crown, our doctor files down the adjacent teeth to easily fit the bridge. He or she then takes impressions of your teeth to make sure the bridge fits well. When the dental bridge is ready to be placed, our doctor uses dental cement to secure it on your affected teeth.

You should return to Oasis Dental Team PC after your procedure to ensure a successful outcome.
